When I was a kid, winter meant packing up and heading to Tahoe for the season so I could snowboard. Those snowy months were some of my favorite times growing up—not just because of the mountains, but because of the moments we spent as a family in our cozy cabin. One of the highlights was the old poker table in our basement. We’d sit around it for hours, playing blackjack, Gin Rummy, and other games, with my dad teaching us the rules and strategy along the way.

He had this way of turning every hand into a lesson, constantly dropping phrases he loved, like “Luck of the draw” or “Don’t count your money at the table.” And, without fail, he would always quote the lyrics from Kenny Rogers’ The Gambler:

“You’ve got to know when to hold ’em,
Know when to fold ’em,

I can still hear him singing those lines with a grin, turning a simple game into a moment we’d all remember.
