When I was two years old, my family bought a 1996 Land Rover Defender 90. Thirty years later, we still have it. Growing up with this car, I developed a love for Land Rovers that has stayed with me ever since. Some of my earliest memories are tied to it, and looking back, it was much more than just a car.

As a kid, the back of the Defender was my favorite place to be. It had two sets of seats facing each other, with simple lap belts and plenty of room. My mom still tells stories about looking back after hitting the brakes hard and finding my car seat tipped over, with me sitting sideways. It’s one of those stories that has followed me throughout my life.

I have old photos of myself playing basketball at four or five years old, shooting hoops at a basket my mom had hung on the front of the Defender. As I got older, it became the car I learned to drive stick shift in. My parents took me straight to the hills to learn, which made for some pretty challenging starts. It wasn’t easy, but once you learn to drive stick in an old Defender, you can pretty much drive anything.

The car was also a part of our time in Santa Barbara. We would take it surfing, and one day, I tried to fit a surfboard inside without realizing it was too long. I shut the back door, and the board went straight through the front windshield. After that, we learned to tie the boards to the roof.

Over the years, the Defender has continued to be part of some of the most meaningful moments in my life. On our wedding day, Brooke arrived with her dad driving the Defender, bringing her to me to get married. We also had it as one of the centerpieces at our reception, with a bouquet of flowers resting on it. Having a car that’s been part of my life since I was two become part of our wedding day made it all the more special.

These are the kinds of memories that have made the Defender so special to me. It’s been part of my childhood, my love for the outdoors, and so many important moments with the people closest to me. Even now, in my thirties, I still have the same appreciation for it that I did growing up.

Inspired by this piece of our family’s history, we created The Ninety Flag as a tribute to the original Defender 90. At Settlers Club, we’re drawn to objects that carry a story, especially those that become part of our lives over time. For me, this flag is a reminder of a car that has been there through so many different stages of life, and of the memories that make certain things impossible to replace.
